Tulsa Sports Commission announces return of USA Volleyball to Tulsa3.21.2013
The Tulsa Sports Commission announced today that it will once again welcome USA Volleyball, the governing body for U.S. Olympic volleyball teams, to Tulsa. Tulsa has been chosen as one of three sites for the 2013 International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World League matches. Other cities are Wichita, KS and Reno, NV.
The FIVB World League is an elite men’s volleyball competition in which the best teams in the world compete in pool play over seven weeks trying to qualify for the final round and a first-place prize of $1 million.
Pools A and B will feature the top 12 teams in the world, while pool C consists of the next best four in addition to Egypt and Japan. The finals will feature the top three teams from pools A and B, the winner of pool C and the host nation.
The U.S. Men’s National Team, competing in pool A, will host France at the Tulsa Convention Center, June 14-15. Other pool A teams are Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria and Poland.
The U.S. team, currently ranked fifth in the world, won its pool in the 2012 World League and went on to finish second in the Final Round. The team also won the World League Final Round in 2008, the same year it won the Olympics.
“We are honored to host this class of extremely talented Olympic level athletes,” said Alex Alston, executive director of the Tulsa Sports Commission.
“Thanks to our partnership with the Tulsa Convention Center, we’re able to attract world-class sporting events such as this, which brings visitors to our city and continues to elevate Tulsa’s standing as a premier destination for top-level sporting events,” Alston said.
This marks the second time the FIVB World League has visited Tulsa. The competition was previously played here in 2011.
“We are very excited to be returning to Tulsa as a World League site,” said Tom Pingel, USA Volleyball senior director of indoor events and high performance. “Tulsa was a superb host with great fan support in 2011 and we expect the 2013 event to be every bit as strong.”
The USA will face France for two matches, June 14-15, at the Tulsa Convention Center Arena. Tickets will go on sale on March 28 at 10:00 a.m. Tickets are available online at www.bokcenter.com, in person at the Arby’s Box Office, through all Tickets.com outlets or by calling 1-866-7-BOKCTR.
